During a Destuche Bank networking session, I happened to have a conversation with Andrew, vice-President of corporate finance. Andrew summarized the importance of developing excellent communication skills within his organisation, “You need to communicate vertically (up to your boss & down to your subordinates) & horizontally (across to your peers). You cannot survive without it.”
Besides career, effective communication is equally important in the university. As undergrads, we often need to present our ideas, lab reports, marketing findings to our lecturers. In addition, we are often assessed during a formal presentation. Achieving good grades partly depends on how well you can deliver your messages across to your lecturers.
Developing effective communication will enhance your personal relationships with your families & friends. After all, we are constantly communicating our extended love to our families. Effective communication is especially important to me as I am committed to a long-distance relationship. Slight miscommunications between people tend to get complicated especially over great distances. Hence, effective communication is absolutely essential in rectifying miscommunications and most importantly in preventing the occurrences of miscommunications.
To conclude, the importance of developing effective communication is clearly evident. However, developing effective communication takes time and effort. Enrolling in ES2007S, seems to be a good start in developing my personal communication skills. With enough hard work & determination, I believe we can possess the ability to communicate effectively in every aspect of our lives. Our lives will definitively be more enriching with it.

Victor, you seem to have a sound appreciation of the importance of communicating. Something which is sadly often overlooked. You mention how you have to deal with superiors, subordinates and peers at work which means of course that you'd have to change your style and choice of words depending on whom you're addressing. Obvious I know but I've witnessed people who operate in one mode only
Dear Victor,
Effective communication skills, contrary to what most people may think, are not bestowed upon you but are learned through interacting with people and through self-upgrading. Don't know how hands-on is your ES2007S but learning the theories is important too. Good job on addressing your weaknesses and showing willingness to improve! That to me is already half the battle won.
=)

Your post has a personal touch with those examples you have given. Points are simple and concise, and well supported with further elaboration. Good job!
I agree that developing effective communication skills is important, particularly when it is being done via e-mail or text messages. The disadvantage of doing things electronically is that it is difficult to judge the tone, and what could be sincerity could be mis-interpreted as sarcasm.
Victor, your determination to improve on your communication skills is admirable. In preventing miscommunication, it really takes so much effort in choosing the right communication channel, choice of words and tones and finally, the actual delivery. Most of the time, I think people either assume that it is the speaker's duty to make the message clear, while others think that the listeners should be able to get it. But I think both should make conscious effort to understand, as well as, be understood. With the awareness of your need to improve and your resolve to do so, I think you will quickly possess that important ability to communicate effectively. =)
Victor,
I thinik your post is really good with overall supporting reasons and plentiful examples. But let me show my feeling.
I guess it would better to add the aspect of active listening (quetioning, discussion stc) in the second paragraph.
And it seems your main point is "our lives will be more enriching with the effective communication skills" and ,if so, you can emphasize that point more in the biggining of the article or last paragraph.
Thanks. You are sure to aquire effective communication skills!
